Trust me!

Hello and welcome to today's episode of the Gold Forest English podcast. My name is Jordan and today I want to talk about two words which are often confused with each other. The two words are believe and trust.

So believe and trust are very similar in meaning, but they are not the same. We can't use them interchangeably. We can't use both in every situation. So let's have a think about the differences between believe and trust. So the main difference here is that believe is thinking about truth. You believe, you think something is true. It's in your mind, it's thoughts, it's, you are really sure that something is true. You accept that it's real, that it's true. So you can say things like, I believe in aliens. So this means that I think aliens are real. I think they exist. So I'm using believe with the word in. I believe believe in aliens. She believes in ghosts. He believes in magic. It's about thinking that something is true, that something is real. So we can use believe in with ideas and concepts, things. Or we can use believe with words like, I believe her. I believe her. means I think that she is telling the truth truth. I believe her. I believe her story. I think her story is true. I believe her. I believe her story. We are really sure that she is telling the truth, that she is being real 100%. So believe is all about this thinking of trueness.

If we move to the word trust, trust is more connected with confidence, we are relying on some one or something, we are feeling confident that this person or this thing will do the thing that they should do. For example, I trust my best friend. It means, I know that my best friend will be a good person to me. They will not lie, they will not cheat with me. They will do the good things for me. I'm sure. I trust my best friend. Here in Japan we can often trust the train schedule. The train system is very reliable and and it's rarely late or delayed significantly. We can trust that the trains will arrive at the correct time. So we are relying on the trains. We are feeling confident that the trains will arrive and leave at the time that they are scheduled. We can rely on them. We can trust them. So the big difference here is believe is about thinking something is true and trust is about feeling confident, feeling safe with this thing or this person. It's dependable.

So a very common phrase in English is trust me, trust me. It means you should believe me, you should accept what I'm saying. You should accept and have confidence in me. This is a very common, persuasive sentence. You want somebody to feel confident and feel safe with you. You say, trust me. It's a very common phrase in English.

So these two words do have very similar meanings, but it's not the same. They're focused on different things. We've got believe, which is focused more on thinking about truth and trust, which is more about feeling confident and relying on someone or something.

So I hope these two words are now clear and understandable for you. I hope this podcast has helped. And try your best to use these words in your in your English speaking, believe and trust, very good words, very common words, and very helpful words. All right.
