Describing Spring

Hello and welcome to today's episode of the Gold Forest English podcast. My name is Jordan and today is Thursday, April 17th and today I truly feel that spring is in the air.

So I just said spring is in the air, and to today I want to talk about spring, the season. OK, so in English, we've got some different phrases and vocabulary that we use connected with the season of spring and it makes sense that the first one to talk about is spring is in the air.

So when people say spring is in the air, it means that we can really feel that the spring season has arrived. The weather is nicer, it's lighter air, it's more fresh, happier feelings. The season of spring has lots of positive light and bright feelings for it, and so when we really feel that spring has really arrived and you feel much lighter and happier with the season, we can use the phrase spring is in the air. So, for example, might say something like, “Today the weather is a little bit cold, but I think spring is in the air.” So I'm starting to feel lighter and brighter.

Another common phrase that we use in spring is connected with flowers. So when flowers open, flowers will open and show their colors. This is an action that we can describe... we can use the word bloom. Bloom is a verb specifically used with flowers that means open. So it's a very useful verb in spring, talking about different flowers are blooming. “The flowers in my garden are blooming.” “The cherry blossoms are blooming on the trees. It's very beautiful.” “I love to see the flowers bloom.” So bloom is an extremely useful vocabulary word for the flowers's opening. Bloom, that's B L O O M. very useful word.

And when there are lots of flowers that are open, we can use the phrase in full bloom. In full bloom, it means flowers are completely open. There's lots of flowers, it's very beautiful, very colorful. “My garden is in full bloom.” “My garden is in full bloom.” Very beautiful phrase to talk about lots of flowers that are healthy and vibrant colors, very, very nice.

An activity in the UK that's very common is spring cleaning. So in England it's very common to clean your house thoroughly in spring season. It's called spring cleaning. So you might spend the week end doing some spring cleaning, so you are doing a thorough and deep clean of your house - cleaning the places that you usually ignore maybe throwing things away that you don't need any more. Just generally refreshing your home and cleaning your home, we use spring cleaning. Of course, this happens in spring we do not do spring cleaning in other times of the year. We would just say, “I cleaned my house thoroughly.” “I did a deep clean.” If we were in a different season, we might use a phrase like that “I did a deep clean of my house,” but in spring we can use the phrase spring cleaning.

So spring is very beautiful and colorful and really nice season, but for a lot of people, it also brings some problems: itchy eyes, watering nose or cough - these allergic reactions, this difficult problem from pollen in the air. The flowers and the trees, giving pollen in the air. So this sickness, this allergy, we call it hay fever in English - hay fever, So you might say, “I have hay fever. Today, my hay fever is really bad, my eyes are very itchy.” Some people also call them seasonal allergies. seasonal allergies, but the main name for it, the most common name in England, is hay fever. So this is a very common problem in Japan. Many people have hay fever from flowers or trees, especially the cedar trees. So if you have hay fever, I'm very sorry. I… I sympathize with you. I understand that it's a very annoying and horrible allergy. It's very difficult. So I hope if you have hay fever, you can manage it and you've got some good medication. So I hope that you can enjoy the spring season as I am.

Well, thank you very much for listening to today's episode. I hope you've had a nice day enjoying the the weather wherever you are and I will see you in the next episode. Goodbye.
