英語の「I’m fine」は失礼?間違えやすい丁寧な返事の正しい使い方3選
In English, we often say that someone is “rude” not because of bad words, but because of how short or direct something sounds. Even if the grammar is perfect, some answers can feel cold, unfriendly, or even a little impolite.
Let’s look at three common examples that many English learners get wrong - so you can speak more naturally and politely in everyday conversations.
1. “I’m fine” – Too short and too cold
When someone says “How are you?”, many learners answer “I’m fine.”
This is not wrong, but in casual conversation, it can feel cold or unfriendly.
It’s very short, and native speakers might think you are tired, angry, or don’t want to talk.
Better replies:
“I’m doing fine.”
“I’m pretty good.”
“I’m feeling okay.”
“I’m doing well, thanks.”
Tips: Adding a little extra makes your answer sound more friendly and open.
It will be even more polite and friendly if you say “thanks” and return the question - “How about you?”
2. “What?” – Can sound rude
Sometimes we listen to English, but don’t understand what was said. In this case, you might think to ask “What?”
In English, if you don’t hear someone, saying “What?” can feel too direct.
It sounds a little annoyed - because the question is short and fast.
Better replies:
“Sorry?”
“Pardon?”
“Could you say that again?”
“Excuse me?”
These sound more polite and are used often in casual and formal conversations.
Notice that difference between “What?” and “Pardon?” is just ONE extra syllable (sound), but this makes a difference in the feeling!
3. “Do you mind if I … ?” – Be careful with your answer!
This question sounds polite, but many learners answer the wrong way.
If someone asks:
“Do you mind if I open the window?”
and you say:
“Yes.”
you are saying: “Yes, I mind. Please don’t open it.”
In this question “Do you mind?”, can be understood as “Will it be a problem for you?” - so we don’t want to say “Yes! It is a problem!”
Better replies:
“No, I don’t mind.”
“Not at all!”
“Go ahead.”
“Sure, that’s fine.”
Remember: When someone says “Do you mind…?”, a “No” answer means “No problem.”
